Buying your first drone in the UK is easier than it looks, but two things trip most people up: the rules and the wind. Every pick below is a drone we've flown ourselves and scored, with UK regulations in mind. Since January 2026 the rules changed: any drone 100g or over now needs a (free) Flyer ID theory test, and if it has a camera you'll also need a CAA Operator ID (£12.34/year). Sub-250g drones still keep the biggest perk — flying in the A1 'Over People' category with the fewest restrictions. We've also weighted our picks towards drones that can handle a typical blustery British day, because a drone you can only fly twice a summer is no fun at all.

Do I need a licence to fly a drone in the UK?
Not a licence as such, but since January 2026: any drone 100g or over needs a free CAA Flyer ID (online theory test, valid 5 years), and if it's 100g+ with a camera you also need an Operator ID (£12.34/year, age 18+ to register). Under 100g, nothing is required. It's illegal to fly without the required IDs.
How much should I spend on a first drone?
£300–£450 gets you a genuinely good sub-250g camera drone that you won't outgrow in six months. Cheaper toy drones are fine for learning stick control indoors, but most lack GPS position hold, which actually makes them harder to fly outdoors.
Where can I fly as a beginner?
Sub-250g (or UK0/UK1 class) drones fly in the Open A1 category — you can fly in most places including over uninvolved people briefly, but never over crowds, never above 120m, and never in an airport Flight Restriction Zone. Check our UK locations map before every flight, and follow the Drone Code.
What happens if I crash?
Sub-250g drones shrug off most gentle crashes. Learn in a wide open field on a calm day, keep it low and slow, and turn on beginner mode until sticks feel natural.
