The Drone and Model Aircraft Code is the CAA's plain-English rulebook for Open category flying — and it's what the Flyer ID test examines. This summary covers the core rules; read the full Code before your test.
The always rules
Keep your aircraft in direct sight at all times, with a full view of the surrounding airspace. Stay below 120m (400ft). Never fly in restricted airspace — including airport Flight Restriction Zones — without permission. Never fly over crowds. Don't carry dangerous goods or drop anything. Use a green flashing light at night.
People and places
How close you can fly to people depends on your Open sub-category. Whatever the category: respect privacy, don't be a nuisance, and get the landowner's permission to take off and land.
Paperwork
Carry your Flyer ID when you fly, and label your Operator ID on the aircraft. Recreational insurance is optional; commercial flying requires third-party cover. Breaking these rules can mean fines — or prison in the most serious cases.
