A2 CofC and GVC: UK drone qualifications explained

Beyond the basic Flyer ID, the UK has two qualifications most pilots hear about. Neither is needed for sub-250g flying — they matter once your drone or your ambitions get bigger.

A2 Certificate of Competence (A2 CofC)

An exam-based certificate that unlocks the A2 'Near People' sub-category for UK2 (or C2) class drones — letting a mid-weight drone fly closer to people than the A3 rules allow. If you've bought a drone in the 250g–4kg range and want to use it anywhere near built-up areas, this is the qualification that makes it practical. Training and exams are delivered by CAA-recognised assessment entities.

General VFR Certificate (GVC)

The qualification for the Specific category — flying that exceeds Open category limits (heavier aircraft, closer to people, congested areas, or beyond A2 allowances). A GVC supports an application for an Operational Authorisation from the CAA, which is also the route required for UK5/UK6 class aircraft. This is the standard path for professional operators.

Which do you need?

Hobbyist with a sub-250g drone: neither. Enthusiast with a UK2-class drone who wants flexibility: A2 CofC. Commercial operator or anyone flying outside Open category limits: GVC + Operational Authorisation.
