White Coppice and Great Hill

White Coppice is a picture-postcard hamlet with a famously scenic cricket ground set against the West Pennine Moors, and it is the gateway to the climb up Great Hill and the ridge toward Spitlers and Redmonds Edge. For pilots it offers two contrasting subjects: the neat cricket field ringed by hills in the valley, and the sweeping, empty moorland tops with long views over the Lancashire plain to the coast. The area needs care over land ownership - much of the moor and the surrounding reservoirs (Anglezarke, the Goit and others) are United Utilities catchment land, where taking off and landing is not permitted, and the higher ground is CRoW open access rather than a right to fly. Launch from genuinely public ground such as the lane verge, keep well away from reservoir infrastructure and dam faces, and gain height on the open access moor for the cleanest air. It is exposed up top, with wind sweeping unbroken across the moor, so trim accordingly. Weekends bring walkers and cricket crowds to the hamlet, but the ridge stays quiet. Come in late afternoon when the low sun rakes across the moorland grasses and the plain hazes gold toward the sea.
