West Bay & East Cliff

West Bay's East Cliff is the Jurassic Coast shot everyone recognises from Broadchurch: a sheer 40-metre wall of golden sandstone, layered like cake, running east toward Burton Bradstock. Unlike much of this coast it isn't National Trust — the harbour and beaches are managed by the local authority and the clifftop is golf club land — so a TOAL from the wide pebble beach below high water keeps you on solid legal ground. The classic image is a side-on pass along the cliff face at half height in evening light, when the sandstone glows orange; the little harbour with its piers and fishing boats gives a second subject in the same flight. Hazards are real here: the cliff sheds rock constantly (people have been killed by falls), so never linger close to the face or encourage spectators beneath it, and the clifftop is an active golf course — flying from up there risks both golf balls and grief. Summer afternoons the beach is packed, so work early or out of season. No airspace issues at all — Bournemouth's FRZ is nearly 50 km away. A south-westerly produces bumpy air in the lee of the cliff; a light northerly gives the smoothest cliff-face passes.
