Waseley Hills Country Park

Waseley Hills Country Park offers a surprising pocket of open, rolling green on the very doorstep of Birmingham, rising to Windmill Hill with long views over the West Midlands conurbation one way and toward the Clent Hills, Shropshire and, on the clearest days, the Malverns the other. The mown grass slopes make for easy, uncluttered take-off and generous line of sight, which is exactly what many urban-fringe pilots lack. It is owned and managed by Worcestershire County Council as a country park; there is no explicit blanket ban, but country-park byelaws mean the polite and safe approach is to fly early, away from the visitor centre, car park and the busy family areas, and to stop if asked. Weekends and school holidays bring walkers, kite flyers and picnickers, so the hilltops get moderately busy. The exposed tops catch the wind and Windmill Hill lives up to its name, giving reliable but gusty conditions, so trim for breeze. Birmingham Airport's zone lies well to the east and does not reach the park, but stay aware of the general airspace over the conurbation and keep low. Early mornings deliver empty slopes, soft light and the cleanest air for those big West Midlands panoramas.
