The Wainstones, Cleveland Hills

The Wainstones are the boldest crags in the Cleveland Hills - a jumble of weathered gritstone towers crowning Hasty Bank, right on the escarpment where the North York Moors drop away to the Tees valley and the plain beyond. On a clear day the view stretches to Roseberry Topping, Teesside and the Cleveland coast, and the rocks themselves make a dramatic foreground for a drone. Launch from the Clay Bank car park at the top of the B1257 pass and walk up the Cleveland Way onto the ridge, or fly the escarpment from near the car park. It is a caution pick for a few reasons: it lies within the North York Moors National Park (no amateur permits on authority land, though it owns little here), the ridge is open-access moor with ground-nesting birds and a managed grouse moor below, and it is a genuinely popular walking and climbing spot on the long-distance path, so keep well clear of people on the rocks. Take off from the car park or track rather than the open moor, avoid the spring nesting season, and mind the wind, which funnels hard over the ridge. No FRZ affects the area. Come at dawn for low light along the escarpment with the plain below still in shadow - it is one of the finest, and least-flown, viewpoints in the North East.
