Thixendale

Thixendale is the quintessential Yorkshire Wolds village - a single street of cottages hidden at the meeting point of half a dozen steep-sided chalk dry valleys, the kind of sinuous green dale David Hockney made famous. For a drone pilot the appeal is those valleys: smooth, treeless, sculpted curves of grassland that look extraordinary from the air, especially in low winter sun or when light rakes across them at dawn and dusk. This is a caution pick, and honesty matters here. The dales are private farmland, mostly grazed, crossed by the Yorkshire Wolds Way and other footpaths but with no open-access right to take off and land, so ideally seek a farmer's permission, or at minimum launch from a public spot like a lane verge or the village, keep well clear of livestock, and fly considerately. Parking is very limited in the village; be courteous. There is no FRZ over the Wolds, though the Wolds Gliding Club at Pocklington lies roughly 10km west, so keep a good lookout for gliders on soaring days. Signal and facilities are sparse. Come at first or last light, pick a valley with clean lines and no stock, and keep flights short - the reward is footage of some of England's most underrated and least-flown landscape.
