The Street, Tankerton (Whitstable)

The Street is a natural shingle spit that appears off Tankerton beach at low tide and runs arrow-straight for the best part of a kilometre into the sea. From directly above it is one of the most graphic images on the Kent coast — a pale line splitting two sheets of shallow water, usually with a procession of walkers strolling out along it. It only exists for a couple of hours either side of low water, so this is a spot you plan around a tide table, ideally a spring low on a calm evening when the water goes glassy. TOAL from the grassy Tankerton Slopes above the beach huts and you have a clear view of the whole spit while staying well away from people below; keep overflight of walkers on the spit itself to a respectful offset. Airspace is clean — nothing controlled anywhere near, and the estuary gives you an uncluttered horizon towards the Maunsell forts and wind farms. Onshore northerlies make the slopes turbulent; a light southerly is the comfortable option. Busy on summer evenings but never Camber-level chaos.
