Sundon Hills Country Park

The Bedfordshire greensand and chalk ridge offers some of the best inland views in the East, and Sundon Hills is the most credible legal way onto it, though not without caveats. It's a Central Bedfordshire Council country park with a free gravel car park off Harlington Road, open-access grassland, coombes and beech woodland, and sweeping escarpment views out over the Bedfordshire plain from the Chilterns AONB. Unlike neighbouring Sharpenhoe Clappers and Dunstable Downs, which are National Trust and firmly ban drone take-off and landing, Sundon Hills is council-owned. Central Bedfordshire publishes no clear drone policy, so this is a no-ban-found situation rather than an explicit yes, and some sources note National Trust involvement in the wider Sharpenhoe group, so a confirming email to the council's countryside team is genuinely worthwhile before you rely on it. It's also a 50-hectare SSSI with chalk-grassland wildlife and grazing sheep, so avoid the nesting season roughly March to July, keep clear of livestock, and launch from near the car park rather than out across the reserve grassland. Luton Airport is about 11km south, outside its FRZ but under busy controlled airspace, so keep low and check NOTAMs. Fly it on a clear autumn or winter day and the ridge light is superb.
