Summerleaze Beach, Bude

Bude gives you an unusually varied frame for one launch point: the curve of Summerleaze beach, the breakwater, the sea lock where the Bude Canal meets the Atlantic, and the famous tidal sea pool tucked under the cliffs. Top-down shots of the sea pool with swimmers doing lengths beside a raging Atlantic are the signature image, and the canal lock gates give strong leading lines. This stretch is not National Trust — the beach and surrounds are managed by the local authority and Bude-Stratton Town Council — and there's no airport FRZ anywhere near, so the legal picture is refreshingly simple. Practically, it's a working seaside town: lifeguards, swimmers, surf schools and dog walkers fill the middle of the beach from May to September, so fly at the edges, keep lateral distance, and never overfly the crowded pool. Wind funnels along the river valley and accelerates over the breakwater; the cliff by Compass Point produces rotor on south-westerlies. Low tide opens up acres of sand for safe TOAL. Early morning light on the sea pool, or a big winter swell hammering the breakwater, are the flights worth driving for.
