Stoodley Pike

A 37m blackened obelisk on a 400m gritstone ridge above the Calder Valley, visible for miles and pure South Pennines drama from the air. Park at Lumbutts or Mankinholes below and it's a 30–40 minute pull up onto Langfield Common — open access moor — where you can TOAL from the grass near the monument. The shots: the Pike stark against racing cloud, the deep trench of the Calder Valley with Todmorden's mills and terraces stitched along the bottom, Gaddings Dam and its improbable little moorland 'beach' ten minutes' walk south-west, and long Pennine ridgelines stacking to the horizon. Two warnings matter here. First, wind: the edge generates strong lift and nasty rotor on the lee side, and it is almost never calm — a still autumn morning is a gift, take it. Second, you're sharing the sky: this escarpment is an active paragliding and hang-gliding site, so scan for canopies before launching and stay well away, and on any flyable SW day assume they'll be out. The monument draws a steady trickle of Pennine Way walkers, so keep your separation around the tower itself. Leeds Bradford's FRZ is about 30km away to the north-east — irrelevant here. Winter snow turns the whole common monochrome and magnificent.
