Slieve Gullion Forest Park

Slieve Gullion sits at the heart of the Ring of Gullion in south Armagh, a ring-dyke of hills encircling the central mountain in a landscape found nowhere else in the region. The forest park has an eight-kilometre scenic drive climbing through the trees to open viewpoints, and from the air the concentric ring of surrounding hills is a remarkable, almost geological composition, with the Mournes visible to the east and Camlough Lake glinting below. The park is Forest Service Northern Ireland land managed locally, so recreational drone flying technically requires permission; the scenic-drive laybys and the open upper slopes above the treeline offer the clearest sightlines. The summit carries a prehistoric passage cairn and a small mountain lake, both scheduled and worth framing but to be respected, not landed on. There is no airport restriction here. This is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with sensitive upland habitat, so keep clear of wildlife and other visitors. The higher ground is exposed and windy, and hill fog can roll in quickly, so pick a settled day. Early and late light rakes beautifully across the ring of hills, and autumn colour in the mixed woodland adds depth. It stays relatively quiet compared with the busier Mourne honeypots to the east.
