Sidmouth Seafront

Sidmouth is a genteel Regency resort at the mouth of the River Sid, framed by towering red Triassic cliffs that glow almost crimson in evening light. For a drone pilot the draw is that colour: Peak Hill and Salcombe Hill bracket the town in deep red sandstone, and a hover out over the sea looking back at the esplanade and cliffs is a classic Jurassic Coast composition. The beach is pebble and shingle, easy to launch from, and the long seafront gives clear sightlines. This is a World Heritage and SSSI coast, so keep well away from the cliff faces, which are unstable and host nesting seabirds, and never fly close to the fragile edges. In summer the esplanade is busy, so choose a quiet corner of the beach and keep clear of people, a sensible habit anywhere. Airspace is comfortable: Exeter Airport lies about 14km to the north west and its flight restriction zone does not reach the town, so you can fly at the beach without a clearance. Sea breezes strengthen through the day, so mornings and calm evenings are best. Sunrise lights the red cliffs from the east, while golden hour warms the whole bay and the town looks its finest.
