Sgwd yr Eira

Sgwd yr Eira is the most famous of the Waterfall Country falls in the south-west corner of Bannau Brycheiniog, celebrated for the ledge that lets walkers pass behind the curtain of water. It is a beautiful spot, but be realistic about drone flying here: the fall sits in a deep, tree-choked gorge on the Afon Hepste where GPS is patchy, sightlines are short and there is little room to manoeuvre, and the busy footpaths mean plenty of people close by. Threading a drone down to the water is difficult and disturbs other visitors, so most flyers get better and safer results filming from the more open ground on the approach or the moorland above the gorge, looking down into the wooded valley. The area is managed by Natural Resources Wales as part of Waterfall Country and lies within the national park, both of which ask for considerate, low-impact flying - keep clear of people, avoid the breeding-bird season in the woods, and do not launch across the crowded paths. There are no airspace restrictions. The falls are at their thundering best after heavy rain, though that is also when the paths are busiest and the light in the gorge is flat. A dry, bright weekday morning is the sensible compromise for a considerate flight.
