Scrabo Tower

Scrabo Tower is one of County Down's most recognisable landmarks, a 19th-century memorial tower crowning a steep dolerite hill above Newtownards with commanding views over Strangford Lough and the Ards peninsula. From the air it is a gift: the tower itself makes a strong central subject, and orbiting it reveals the lough stretching south, the patchwork of drumlin farmland, and the town below. The hill and surrounding woodland form Scrabo Country Park, managed by Forest Service Northern Ireland, so recreational drone flying technically requires their permission; in practice many fly from the summit area, but check current signage and be discreet. The nearest controlled airspace is Belfast City Airport roughly 11km northwest, comfortably outside its flight restriction zone, so there is no FRZ issue at the tower. The hilltop is exposed and the wind can be strong, funnelling around the tower, so allow margin and watch for turbulence close to the stonework. The old quarry faces on the hill add texture to lower passes. It can get busy with walkers on fine weekends and evenings, so early morning gives the cleanest sky and softest light on the lough. Strangford is important for wintering wildfowl, so keep your altitude and distance sensible over the water to the south.
