Scout Scar

Scout Scar is a limestone escarpment on the western edge of Kendal, offering one of the finest low-effort panoramas in the area. The Lakeland fells rise to the west while the Kent estuary and Morecambe Bay shine to the south. A short, level walk from the Underbarrow Road car park brings you to the 'Mushroom' shelter and the open cliff edge. The ground is registered common land and CRoW access land, so foot access is easy, but remember that open access status does not by itself grant a legal right to take off and land. Be discreet and courteous. This spot sits just outside the Lake District National Park boundary, so the park's voluntary no-drone guidance is less pressing here, though nearby honeypots still apply. There is no Flight Restriction Zone overhead. Walkers, dog-walkers and paragliders use the top regularly, so keep clear of people and launch away from the path. The escarpment edge produces reliable updraughts, so watch for gusts near the drop. Early morning gives soft light along the scar and the quietest conditions before the Kendal crowd arrives.
