Sandyhills Bay

Sandyhills Bay is a broad, sandy beach on the Solway coast of Dumfries and Galloway, backed by low cliffs, dunes, and rolling farmland, with views across the firth to the Lake District hills on a clear day. It is a relaxed, family-friendly beach that stays surprisingly quiet outside summer, and it makes an easy, legal, and rewarding drone location. The wide expanse of firm sand at low tide gives clean take-off ground and long, uncluttered sightlines out over the water. There is no airport FRZ here. One regional caution worth noting: the Dundrennan military range lies well to the west along the coast, but Sandyhills sits comfortably clear of it, so you are fine flying here. The Solway has a large tidal range and fast-moving tides, so check the times and never launch from ground that will soon be cut off. Coastal winds can be brisk, so a settled day is best. Waders and shorebirds feed on the flats, so keep launches away from feeding flocks and avoid low passes over birds. Park in the car park behind the beach and walk down. Best in late afternoon and at sunset, when the low western light rakes across the wet sand and the tide is out to reveal the full sweep of the bay.
