Portstewart Promenade

Portstewart's promenade curls around a rocky little harbour beneath the Victorian seafront, with the Atlantic breaking on the point and Dominican College standing sentinel on the headland. Crucially for pilots, this is the non-National Trust end of town: the famous Portstewart Strand a mile west is Trust land where take-off and landing are banned, but the promenade, harbour and the council-managed rocky foreshore here are public. That said, mark it 'caution' - it's a built-up seafront that gets genuinely busy, and the real challenge is staying clear of uninvolved people and traffic rather than any landowner issue. Fly early on an off-season weekday, launch from the rocks or harbour wall away from crowds, and keep the aircraft out over the sea where the swell, foam and low sun make superb compositions. The coastline west toward the Strand and east toward Portrush both frame well from modest height. Airspace is unrestricted: City of Derry's FRZ is about 32km to the west. Watch for strong, gusty Atlantic onshore winds funnelling along the front, salt spray, and gulls that will happily investigate a drone. Sunset here, with the light going down over the water, is the reason to come.
