Poppit Sands & Teifi Estuary

Poppit Sands sits where the Teifi meets Cardigan Bay, and from the air the location makes sense in a way it never quite does from the ground: huge tidal sandbars snake across the estuary mouth, Cemaes Head's folded cliffs mark the start of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, and Cardigan Island floats offshore. Top-down abstracts of the sand channels at half tide are the signature shot — the patterns change with every tide, so no two sessions look the same. There is a big pay-and-display car park behind the beach and TOAL from the open sand is simple; walk a couple of hundred metres from the lifeboat station and you have the place largely to yourself outside school holidays. Two operational cautions. The RNLI station at the beach entrance means occasional launch activity — never fly near the slipway when the station is active, and give the estuary channel a wide berth if boats are moving. And this is serious grey seal territory: from late August to November, seals pup in coves along Cemaes Head, so keep the drone away from the cliff bases and haul-outs entirely in autumn. Wind funnels up the estuary; ebb-tide evenings with light offshore breeze give glassy water and the best reflections.
