Orford Quay

Orford Quay is a compact, atmospheric launch on the Suffolk Sandlings coast, where the river Ore curls behind the great shingle spit of Orford Ness. From the quay and the adjoining greens you can frame the twelfth-century castle keep rising over the rooftops, the fishing boats and moorings, and the wide reed-fringed estuary - classic, timeless Suffolk. The essential rule here is Orford Ness itself: the spit directly across the water is National Trust land and a National Nature Reserve, drones are prohibited, and the shingle holds hugely sensitive nesting birds, so you must not overfly it or let the aircraft drift toward it. Keep your flying on the village side, over the quay and river, and be mindful of the National Trust ferry and small craft coming and going. Airspace is benign - there is no nearby flight restriction zone, with Wattisham some twenty-five kilometres north-west. The site is exposed, so pick a calm day; wind funnels along the estuary and salt air is ever-present. Mornings and still evenings give the best light and the quietest quay. Park in the pay-and-display by the quay, keep flights low and considerate of visitors around the castle and the boat trips, and treat the whole reserve opposite as strictly off-limits.
