Old Winchester Hill

Old Winchester Hill is a magnificent chalk summit in the South Downs National Park, crowned by an Iron Age hillfort and Bronze Age burial mounds, with far-reaching views across Hampshire toward the Isle of Wight on a clear day. The rolling grassland, ancient earthworks and yew-clad slopes make it a rewarding place to fly, and the ridge photographs beautifully in early light. There is an important caveat: this is a National Nature Reserve managed by Natural England, home to rare chalk grassland, orchids, butterflies and ground-nesting birds. Drone flying can disturb wildlife and is discouraged on the reserve itself, so check the current reserve rules, avoid the bird breeding season, and consider launching from the nearby lane or public footpaths rather than the heart of the reserve. Parking is in a small free car park on the ridge road, with a short walk to the fort. It is usually quiet on weekdays but busier at weekends. The hill sits well outside any flight restriction zone, roughly eighteen kilometres from Southampton airport, so airspace is not the concern here; wildlife sensitivity is. Fly respectfully, keep flights short and give birds and grazing sheep a wide berth.
