Newlands Corner

The most useful legal launch in the Surrey Hills, given how much of the good stuff round here — Box Hill, Leith Hill, the Devil's Punch Bowl — is National Trust land where TOAL is banned. Newlands Corner is privately owned by the Albury Estate with long-standing public access and a big car park right on the A25, 170m up on the North Downs escarpment. The view south over the greensand hills to the Weald is the widest in Surrey, and a drone at 100m over the scarp edge gets rolling wooded ridges stacked in blue layers — best after rain in autumn when the air is scrubbed clean. Airspace needs respect rather than fear: you're in the gap between Heathrow, Gatwick and Farnborough FRZs, all comfortably 18km+ away, but keep an eye out for GA traffic running along the Downs and gliders/light aircraft out of Dunsfold to the south. The site is popular — dog walkers, cyclists and an ice cream van most weekends — so TOAL away from the café end and fly over the scarp rather than the car park. Grass slopes give smooth air in a southerly; northerlies tumble over the ridge.
