Newborough Beach & Ynys Llanddwyn

Newborough is one of Anglesey's most cinematic stretches: a two-mile arc of pale sand backed by Corsican pine forest, with the tidal island of Ynys Llanddwyn reaching out to the whitewashed Twr Mawr lighthouse and a pair of old pilots' cottages. On a clear day the Llyn peninsula and the Eryri skyline fill the horizon behind you, giving huge depth to any panning shot. Launch from the open sand well away from the dunes and forest edge, and you will find plenty of room to climb without snagging updrafts off the headland. The light is best late in the day when the lighthouse catches golden sun and the wet sand mirrors the sky. This is a National Nature Reserve on NRW-managed land, so keep clear of nesting choughs and ravens on the island crags, avoid the ternery, and never overfly the busy car-park end in summer. Sea breezes build quickly across the flats, so watch your battery margins on the return leg. Reversing shots out over Llanddwyn towards the mountains are the signature move here.
