Ness Wood Country Park

Ness Wood, a short drive east of Derry, is built around the Burntollet River and the Ness waterfall, the highest in Northern Ireland at around 9 metres. The wooded gorge, oak canopy and cascading water make an atmospheric subject, though the tree cover means the waterfall itself is best captured from lower, careful passes rather than high overhead. Above the canopy, the country park opens onto a patchwork of Sperrin foothill farmland that photographs well in low light. This is a Forest Service Northern Ireland country park, so recreational drone flying technically needs permission, and the tight, tree-lined gorge demands cautious flying and good line of sight; the open fields and car park edge give safer launch ground than the wooded trails. City of Derry Airport lies roughly 8km north, so while you are outside its flight restriction zone here, stay aware of the direction and keep well below any transiting traffic. The waterfall runs hardest after heavy rain, which is when the gorge looks most dramatic, while autumn brings strong colour to the broadleaf woodland. It is usually quiet on weekdays. Damp, still conditions suit the sheltered gorge; avoid windy days when turbulence among the trees makes low flying near the falls risky.
