Musbury Tor

A flat-topped moorland prow above Helmshore in the West Pennine Moors, ringed by the ghostly terraces of old Musbury Heights quarries. It is a quietly brilliant local spot: a short pull up from Alden Road brings you to open access land with a clean edge dropping to the Musbury valley and long views over the Rossendale hills and, on a clear evening, out toward the Bowland skyline. Being unfashionable is its strength - you rarely share the top, so there is room to launch and fly without a crowd underneath. The abandoned quarry workings and packhorse tracks give strong foreground texture, and low sun rakes the ridged spoil heaps beautifully. This is exposed Pennine moor, so it can be windy and the ground is a mix of firm sheep-cropped turf and boggy patches; go after a dry spell. A good all-rounder for practising ridge and reveal shots close to the Manchester conurbation but a world away from it.
