Moel Famau Country Park

Moel Famau is the high point of the Clwydian Range and the best all-round drone hill in north-east Wales. The ruined Jubilee Tower on the summit gives you a proper subject rather than just a view, and from 100m up beside it the panorama runs from the Dee estuary and Liverpool's skyline across to the whole Eryri range — on sharp winter days you can pick out Yr Wyddfa 40 miles away. The heather plateau flames purple in late August, and the string of Iron Age hillforts along the ridge (Moel Arthur, Penycloddiau) make superb linear compositions in low light. Launch options are flexible: the Bwlch Penbarras car park sits at 350m so you are halfway up before you start, or you can walk 45 minutes to TOAL near the summit — keeping the mandatory 50m from the crowds that gather at the tower, which on sunny weekends means walking a little off the main path. Airspace is fine but deserves a check: Hawarden's FRZ sits about 18km east, well clear, though low-flying military traffic uses the Vale of Clwyd. This is a proper hill despite the easy access — the summit is dramatically windier than the car park, and cloud caps it regularly. Weekday mornings give you the tower to yourself.
