Marston Vale Millennium Country Park

The Millennium Country Park at Marston Vale is a landscape-scale restoration project in the clay vale south-west of Bedford, where old brick pits have become a broad lake, reedbeds, wet grassland and young community woodland threaded with easy trails. It is flat, green and increasingly wild, with the lake and reedbeds offering attractive foregrounds and a genuine sense of open space unusual this close to the Bedford-Milton Keynes corridor. Access is managed by the Forest of Marston Vale Trust, and recreational drone take-off and landing on the park needs the Trust's permission, so the courteous approach is to ask first, or to launch from an adjoining public byway and keep clear of the visitor centre, cafe and family areas. On airspace, Cranfield Airport's zone sits roughly five kilometres to the west-north-west, so check that your launch point falls outside its flight restriction zone before you fly. The lake and reedbeds attract breeding and wintering birds, so keep flights away from the water margins, especially in spring. A weekday morning is quietest and gives the softest light over the water. Conditions are generally sheltered but can gust across the open lake. Park at the Forest Centre, keep low and brief, and you have a rare large green-space option in Bedfordshire.
