Bruce's Stone, Loch Trool

Deep in Galloway Forest Park, this is the quiet, rugged south nobody expects Scotland to have. From the Bruce's Stone car park a granite knoll overlooks Loch Trool cradled by the Merrick range — Scotland's highest hills south of the Central Belt. A climb-out gives you the whole loch pinched between steep oak-clad slopes, with the Buchan burn tumbling in at the head. It photographs best in low side-light: morning throws the wooded northern shore into shadow and lights the water. Because Galloway Forest is a designated Dark Sky Park, it's also a rare legal spot to attempt astro-timelapse from a stable ground position (fly by day, shoot stars from the tripod — genuine night drone flight needs care and lights). Winds are generally gentler than the big northern glens but can gust down off the Merrick. It's Forestry and Land Scotland ground with full access rights, no airport FRZ for 60km-plus (Prestwick is far northwest), and it's blissfully uncrowded midweek. Single-track road in — drive slowly, and don't fly over the memorial gatherings.
