Leckhampton Hill & Devil's Chimney

Leckhampton Hill is the Cotswold escarpment at its most dramatic on Cheltenham's doorstep — old limestone quarries, sheer faces and the Devil's Chimney, a slender free-standing rock pinnacle perched on the edge with the town and the Severn Vale spread out beyond. The hill is common land owned by Cheltenham Borough Council and a National Nature Reserve, and pilots have long listed it among the best escarpment viewpoints in the region. Fly responsibly in keeping with its NNR status: avoid disturbing birds nesting on the quarry faces in spring and early summer, and keep clear of the many walkers who come for the view. Launch from the grass near the Daisy Bank Road car park and work along the escarpment edge for the drop-away perspective and the Chimney against the vale. It is breezy and thermic here — paragliders and buzzards both use the ridge lift — so watch the wind. The surface is grass, limestone and quarry paths. The nearest FRZ is Gloucestershire (Staverton) Airport about 7km north-west, safely outside its zone. Clear golden-hour evenings, when low sun rakes the escarpment and lights the Chimney, are the standout.
