Lathkill Dale (Over Haddon)

Lathkill Dale is the connoisseur's White Peak dale - a limestone valley of clear, trout-filled water, wooded slopes and old lead-mining ruins that stays greener and far quieter than nearby Dovedale. Park in the pay-and-display at Over Haddon (Derbyshire Dales District Council) and you're on the lip of the dale within two minutes, with a gorgeous top-down composition down to the weirs and packhorse clapper bridge. The catch: the dale floor is a National Nature Reserve run by Natural England, and low flying to chase the river will draw justified objections - the interest here is bats, wildflower banks and breeding birds. Treat it as a viewpoint shoot: take off from the hardstanding or grass verge by the car park, keep the aircraft high and near your own position, and frame the dale rather than buzzing the water. There is no FRZ anywhere near - East Midlands Airport is over 40km away - so airspace is easy Class G. Signal is clean on the tops but drops fast once you descend into the gorge, so don't fly line-of-sight down the dale. Mornings deliver mist pooling on the valley floor and side-light along the western slope.
