Holmbury Hill

One of the finest southward views in Surrey, and — unusually for this airspace-choked county — a clean one to fly. The Iron Age hillfort clearing at 261m opens out over the Weald to the line of the South Downs, and on a crisp winter afternoon the layered ridgelines are superb. The land ownership is the key detail: this is the Hurtwood, privately owned but open-access land managed by the Friends of the Hurtwood, NOT the National Trust that closes off nearby Leith Hill, so there's no blanket TOAL ban. That said, the Friends ask visitors to be considerate, and the Hurtwood is a hugely popular walking and mountain-biking hub, so choose a quiet slot, launch from the open viewpoint clearing away from trails, and keep well clear of riders and dogs. Airspace is refreshingly simple for Surrey: you're roughly 16km west of the Gatwick FRZ and about 10km from Dunsfold aerodrome to the south-west, both clear. Park at the Hurtwood car parks off Radnor Lane and walk up. Trees flank the clearing, so plan your launch and RTH with the canopy in mind.
