Hergest Ridge

A broad, grassy whaleback straddling the England–Wales border just west of Kington, and a dream for open flying: registered common land with open access, close-cropped turf, wild ponies, and hardly a fence or tree to snag a line of sight. From the ridge you get sweeping 360s to the Black Mountains, Radnor Forest and, eastward, the distant Malverns, with the curious monkey-puzzle clump and a Victorian racecourse as quirky subjects on top. Free parking sits at the top of Ridgebourne Road (HR5 3EG) right at the ridge access, so it's an easy stroll to a launch spot — the springy turf makes hand-launch or ground TOAL trivial. Being an exposed ridge it does catch the wind, but the smooth open ground means few obstacles and forgiving flying once you're used to the flow. Watch for grazing ponies and sheep and the odd walker on the Offa's Dyke Path. Note light-aircraft and glider activity from Shobdon airfield some 13km east — stay low and keep a good look-out. Superb at sunset with the border hills layering into the west.
