Hay Bluff & Gospel Pass

Hay Bluff is the northern prow of the Black Mountains, and the roadside car park below it — just off the highest classified road pass in Wales — puts you 500 feet of relief away from enormous views with almost no walking. From the bluff the escarpment drops in one clean sweep to the patchwork of the Wye Valley, and a drone lets you shoot along the scarp edge toward Twmpa (Lord Hereford's Knob) with the Brecon hills layered behind. Heather turns the whole plateau purple in August, and autumn temperature inversions fill the Wye Valley with cloud you can float above — the single best shot this site offers. The land is open common grazed by Welsh mountain ponies and sheep, with no National Trust complication on this northern scarp. The critical local factor is that Hay Bluff is an active and popular hang-gliding and paragliding site run under SEWHGPGC: on any flyable day with a north-westerly, expect canopies working the ridge lift exactly where you want to fly. Manned aviation always has priority — if gliders are rigging or airborne, put the drone away or move well along the scarp. Wind on the edge is always stronger than at the car park; test at height over the flat before committing to the drop-off.
