Garway Hill Common

Garway Hill is a broad, open common in quiet south-west Herefordshire, rising to a trig-pointed summit with a huge sweep of views over the Golden Valley to the Black Mountains and the Skirrid. Crucially for pilots, this is registered common land with CRoW open access - no National Trust ban, no reserve restriction - so a sub-250g hobbyist can legally take off and land here, which makes it one of the cleaner-conscience flights in the county. There's informal roadside/verge parking where the lanes meet the common on the north-east side, and a short grassy pull up to the open top. The flying is relaxed and expansive: rounded bracken-and-grass slopes, a hut-circle and the trig for foreground, and layer upon layer of border hills fading west at sunset. It's genuinely quiet - you'll often have it to yourself - with skylarks, ponies and the odd walker to keep clear of. Being open and high, it catches the wind, and mobile signal is patchy, so fly on GPS with a planned home point. No FRZ anywhere near - empty Class G close to the Welsh border, though military low-flying does cross here, so keep a lookout. Sunset west toward the mountains is the picture.
