Frodsham Hill (Mersey View)

Cheshire is awkward drone country — the obvious beauty spots are National Trust (Helsby Hill, Bickerton, The Cloud), Forestry England or wildlife trust reserves — which is why the sandstone brow above Frodsham earns its place. From the war memorial on Overton Hill the escarpment drops away to the Mersey estuary, and the view is pure north-west industrial sublime: the river's silver sweep, Stanlow's flare stacks, wind turbines out toward Liverpool Bay, and the Clwydian hills floating behind. At sunset, with the refineries lit and the estuary reflecting orange, you can shoot genuinely cinematic material that nobody associates with Cheshire. The caution flag is earned twice over. First, airspace: Liverpool Airport's FRZ boundary is roughly 4–5 km away at its nearest point across the river — you're legal at the hill, but check NATS, set a conservative height, and don't wander north over the estuary. Second, ground: the hilltop is a patchwork of memorial viewpoint, golf course and private woodland on the sandstone ridge, so TOAL from the open ground at the memorial, keep well clear of golfers, and be ready to be asked what you're doing. The estuary below is also a protected bird site, so treat the saltmarsh as look-don't-overfly. Evenings midweek are quiet; weekend afternoons bring a steady flow of walkers on the Sandstone Trail.
