Folkestone Downs (Castle Hill)

Castle Hill, better known as Caesar's Camp, is the ramparted Iron Age hillfort at the western end of the Folkestone Downs, a sweeping run of open chalk grassland managed for public access by the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership. It is not National Trust and not fenced country park, so take-off from the open down is defensible, and the site is a long-established paragliding and hang-gliding hill, which tells you the airspace is clean Class G with reliable ridge lift on a southerly. The reward is a huge panorama the Channel, Folkestone harbour, and the North Downs escarpment rolling west above deep chalk combes. Two big cautions. First, this is a working free-flight site paragliders have right of way and a drone in their airspace is dangerous and unwelcome, so check the hill is clear and avoid weekends and good soaring days. Second, the Eurotunnel terminal sits directly below to the north; treat it as sensitive infrastructure and never overfly it or the M20. Ground-nesting skylarks use the down in spring. Winds accelerate over the scarp, so expect turbulence in the lee. Fly early on a light day and you will have the ramparts to yourself.
