Farley Mount Country Park

Farley Mount is a large Hampshire County Council country park west of Winchester, a swathe of open chalk down, beech hangers and grassland crowned by a curious white pyramid monument to a horse. It is one of the more genuinely flyable spots in the county open, publicly owned downland with big skies and rolling views over the Test valley and the Winchester downs. The high point around the monument gives clean 360-degree horizons and easy take-off from short turf. Airspace is comfortable Southampton's control zone lies about 13km southeast and you are well outside it, with open Class G below, though a glance at a map before flying is always wise. Practical notes the site is popular with dog walkers, horse riders and families, especially at weekends, so an early or midweek start keeps you clear of people and horses, and the bridleways carry riders you must give space. Winds move freely across the exposed top and there is lee turbulence behind the beech clumps. Skylarks and other ground-nesting birds use the grassland in spring, so avoid low passes over nesting areas. There are several free car parks along the ridge. For a legal, uncomplicated downland flight with proper views, Farley Mount is a reliable choice.
