Elie Ness

Elie Ness sits at the tip of a rocky headland on the East Neuk of Fife, marked by a squat white lighthouse and fringed by rock pools, low reefs, and clear water. It is a quietly beautiful and often overlooked spot, a short walk from the village of Elie and its wide sandy bay. For a drone pilot the headland offers a clean seaward outlook, the lighthouse as a strong subject, and views along the Forth to the Isle of May and, on clear days, the Lothian coast beyond. It lies about four kilometres from the existing St Monans spot, comfortably clear of duplication, and there is no airport FRZ here, with Leuchars well to the north. The exposure means wind straight off the Firth of Forth, so pick a settled day and be ready for gusts around the point. Rocks and the lighthouse structure are the main obstacles, so keep a sensible buffer. The Ruby Bay area and adjacent coast are used by seabirds and waders, so avoid disturbing feeding flocks. Park at the Ruby Bay car park and walk out to the point. Best at sunrise or on a bright morning when the low sun lights the lighthouse and the water turns turquoise over the pale rock; calm conditions give the cleanest reflections and safest flying.
