Dovercourt Leading Lights

The most photogenic subject on this stretch of Essex coast: two slender Victorian cast-iron leading lights standing on a causeway off Dovercourt's south-facing beach, walkable at low tide and made for aerial framing. Launch from the Lower Marine Parade promenade, which is Tendring District Council land above a sand-and-shingle Blue Flag beach with timber groynes, then work the twin towers against the sweep of the bay, with Harwich harbour shipping and the Felixstowe container cranes on the skyline. A few practical cautions. The Lower Marine Parade car park is grassy and free but seasonal, closed entirely from October to April and locked in the evening in summer, so plan on-street parking off-season. The beach faces south and sits outside the estuary bird-protection zone, which is why it's the safer choice, but the heavily protected Stour and Orwell estuaries begin just north around the harbour, so keep clear that way. Harwich Haven Authority also bans launching from its harbour land, so stay on the council promenade. Airspace is clear of Stansted and Southend. As with the whole 2023 Tendring drone policy, a quick confirming call is wise. Salt spray and wind on the exposed prom demand a calm window for a light drone.
