Derwent Reservoir (Pow Hill)

A large upland reservoir straddling the Durham and Northumberland border, ringed by conifer stands, heather moor and open pasture on the edge of the North Pennines. Pow Hill Country Park on the quieter southern shore gives easy access, parking and a mix of woodland and open ground overlooking the water, with big skies and long reflections when the wind drops. For pilots it is a spacious, uncluttered spot with clean sightlines across the reservoir and the surrounding moorland, and far fewer people than the honeypot Lake District waters. The main consideration is land ownership: the reservoir and much of its shoreline belong to Northumbrian Water, and a sailing club operates on the water, so keep clear of boats and any organised activity and be prepared that permission can be withdrawn. Launch from the country park's open ground rather than private farmland. This is designated as part of the North Pennines National Landscape, so fly considerately around wildlife and other visitors, and give wintering wildfowl on the water a wide berth. There is no airport flight restriction zone. Being high and exposed, the site catches the wind and cloud quickly, so pick a settled day, watch for gusts funnelling across the open water, and keep your battery reserves healthy for the walk back.
