Danby Beacon

A 299m summit in the northern North York Moors with a road to the top, a small free car park beside the modern beacon sculpture, and a full 360° payoff: Eskdale's patchwork below, heather moor rolling south for miles, and the North Sea glinting beyond Whitby on a clear day. For pure convenience-to-view ratio it's hard to beat — you can TOAL within twenty metres of the car. In August the heather turns the whole plateau purple and this becomes one of the best drone landscapes in the north of England; in winter, inversion mornings fill Eskdale with cloud and leave the beacon floating above it. It's open access moorland, so the usual honest caveat applies: CROW gives you the right to walk, not an explicit right to fly, so stay low-key, land if asked, and absolutely keep away from ground-nesting birds — curlew, golden plover and merlin breed on this moor from March to July, so keep flights high and brief in that window and TOAL from the car park, not out in the heather. Note RAF Fylingdales sits about 12km south-east: it's a protected, sensitive site, so keep your flying local to the beacon and don't range that way. Wind at 299m is always a grade worse than the forecast for Danby village.
