Cranfield West Beach

Cranfield, at the southern tip of County Down where Carlingford Lough opens to the Irish Sea, gives you a broad sweep of golden sand with the Mourne Mountains rising behind and the Cooley peninsula across the water in the Republic - a genuinely dramatic backdrop for a beach launch. The western beach (Cranfield West) is the quieter, more scenic end, away from the caravan parks, and take-off from the open sand at low tide is straightforward. This is a Newry, Mourne and Down Council beach and the foreshore is public, so it's one of the cleaner 'open' spots on this coast - just keep clear of the lifeguarded swimming area in season and the busy caravan sites. Views are outstanding in several directions: the Mournes to the north, Haulbowline lighthouse and the lough mouth to the west, and open sea to the south. Airspace is unrestricted - there's no FRZ within roughly 50km - though note you're right on the border, with Republic of Ireland airspace just across the lough, so keep the aircraft over the NI side. Winds funnel in and out of Carlingford Lough and can be strong, and it's tidal, so check times. Low tide at golden hour is the sweet spot.
