Coombe Hill

Coombe Hill is one of the highest viewpoints in the Chilterns at 260m, its Boer War memorial standing on the scarp above Wendover with a sweeping panorama across the Aylesbury Vale. It is a magnificent landscape, but a firm caution the hill is National Trust land, and the Trust bans drone take-off and landing across its holdings, so flying here legally means launching from a public right of way or nearby non-Trust ground rather than the open summit. Be doubly aware of aircraft the Halton gliding site sits only around 5km north and gliders can be low and silent, while helicopters from nearby RAF stations transit the area, so keep low, stay alert and give way. Airspace itself is Class G with no aerodrome flight restriction zone over the hill. If you secure a lawful launch point the rewards are excellent the chalk scarp, beech woods, and the memorial obelisk against a huge western sky. Hazards include lee turbulence off the steep escarpment, tall trees on the slopes, and paths that are popular with walkers year-round. Ground-nesting birds use the chalk grassland in spring. Treat this as a spot to fly only with the right permission or from adjoining access land; the honest note is that the NT default is no.
