Cheesefoot Head

A classic South Downs viewpoint on the A272 just east of Winchester, Cheesefoot Head looks down into a natural chalk amphitheatre — the Matterley Bowl — where General Eisenhower addressed Allied troops before D-Day in 1944. For a drone it's all sweeping downland: big skies, rolling arable and grassland, and the deep green bowl itself, which reads beautifully from height in raking evening or harvest light. TOAL is easy from the roadside car park or the South Downs Way verge, and this is open-access downland with no National Trust TOAL ban to trip over. Airspace sits under the Solent CTA but comfortably below the 400ft ceiling; the excluded Southampton FRZ is about 14km south-west and Popham airfield roughly 15km north-east, both clear. Two practical notes: the A272 is fast, so take care parking and keep the aircraft well away from the road and traffic; and if the Matterley estate is hosting an event (the Boomtown festival uses the bowl), give it a wide berth or avoid those dates entirely. A clear, still evening with long shadows across the bowl is the shot to wait for.
