Cave Hill and Belfast Castle

Cave Hill is the basalt escarpment that looms over north Belfast, its distinctive 'Napoleon's Nose' profile giving one of the best city-and-lough panoramas in Ireland. Belfast Castle sits on its lower slopes in Cave Hill Country Park, which is Belfast City Council public land with a large free car park, and that is your legitimate access point. From height you get the castle and its terraced gardens in the foreground, the whole city sprawling to Belfast Lough beyond, and the cliff faces and McArt's Fort above. This is firmly a caution spot for two reasons. First, congestion: central Belfast is a heavily built-up area and the park itself is popular, so you must keep well away from uninvolved people and avoid drifting out over the residential city, favour the quieter upper trails and an early weekday slot. Second, airspace: George Best Belfast City Airport lies roughly 6 to 7km to the south-east, so you are close to but outside its FRZ, and Belfast International is around 18km west. Always check a live app such as Drone Assist before launching here. Note too that neighbouring Divis and the Black Mountain are National Trust land where TOAL is banned, so keep operations within the country park. Superb views, but plan for people and airspace.
