Camber Sands

Camber is the closest thing the South East has to a proper desert-island flying location: three miles of flat golden sand backed by the only large dune system in East Sussex. At low tide the beach is enormous, and a drone at 80–100m pulls in lovely abstract patterns of ribbed sand, tidal lagoons and long shadows off the dunes. It is also one of the few genuinely legal coastal launches in this corner of the country — crucially, do not be tempted to push east towards Dungeness: the Lydd Ranges danger area (EG D044) starts just beyond Jury's Gap, and Dungeness itself sits under the EG R063 nuclear restricted zone plus the Lydd Airport FRZ, so that iconic shingle-and-shack landscape is effectively off the menu. Wind is the big gotcha here — there is zero shelter, sand gets airborne at anything above 15mph and will find its way into motors, so launch from a landing mat or a groyne. Summer weekends are heaving; fly early morning off-season and you will often have the west end to yourself.
