Calshot Beach

Calshot is a shingle spit hooking out into the mouth of Southampton Water, and it is a fantastic subject from the air: the Tudor Calshot Castle at the point, a listed row of colourful beach huts, the old flying-boat and Sunderland hangars of the activities centre, and a nonstop parade of cruise liners, tankers and yachts sliding past to Southampton. The long, thin geometry of the spit almost composes itself, whether you orbit the castle or track a ship along the deep-water channel. It is an open, public foreshore with generous parking by the activities centre, so ground launches are easy and there is room to stay clear of people. Watch two things: the Fawley oil refinery sits immediately north, so keep flights over the spit, castle and sea and never toward the plant; and this is genuinely busy water, so mind fast-moving marine traffic. Airspace is otherwise clear, with no FRZ overhead and Southampton airport roughly 12km north, leaving you free to work the point. It can be windy and exposed out on the shingle, which also keeps the air clean. Weekday mornings are quietest; time a cruise-ship departure from Southampton for a memorable moving subject, and shoot the beach huts in low golden-hour side light.
