Bury Down (Ridgeway)

Bury Down is classic open Berkshire/Oxfordshire downland right on the Ridgeway National Trail, and it is one of the easier big-sky sites in the region to fly legally. A free car park sits directly on the ancient trackway, so you step out onto CROW open-access chalk grassland with sweeping views: the Vale of White Horse and distant Cotswolds to the north, rolling downs and racehorse gallops all around, and huge uncluttered skies overhead. The Ridgeway itself makes a natural leading line for a long track shot, and the arable-and-grassland patchwork is lovely in raking light. Practicalities are simple: firm hardstanding and short turf for easy launches, plenty of room to keep clear of the walkers, cyclists and horse riders who share the trail, and you should give the horses a wide, low, quiet berth. TOAL from the byway and access land is straightforward, though the surrounding fields are working farmland, so do not launch over stock. Airspace is clean, with no FRZ overhead, RAF Benson roughly 16km northeast and no controlled zone above the down, though it is still worth a NOTAM check for military activity. It is exposed, so expect wind and choose a calmer window. Dawn is magic here: mist in the vale, low sun along the Ridgeway, and almost nobody about.
