Burrow Mump

Burrow Mump is a near perfect conical knoll rising from the flat Somerset Levels, topped by a roofless ruined church and offering a commanding sweep over the moors, rhynes and willow lines of King's Sedgemoor. For a drone it is a gift: an isolated landmark with clean surroundings, and in winter, when the Levels flood, the mump becomes an island in a silver sheet of water that photographs superbly from above. The hill itself is National Trust, held as a war memorial, so avoid taking off and landing on it; launch instead from the public lane and small parking area at the base or an adjacent footpath off their ground. It is a quiet spot most of the year, with few crowds to work around, though the church draws occasional visitors. Airspace is entirely open here, far from any flight restriction zone, so there is nothing to clear before flying. The Levels are windswept and there is little shelter, so a calm day makes for a much easier flight over such flat, exposed ground. The best conditions come after winter rains, when floodwater surrounds the knoll, or at dawn when mist sits low across the moors and the church stands proud above it.
